Do I really need a lawyer?
Last year, more than 50,000 San Diegans called LRIS to assist them with
their legal problems.
One of the most important services the LRIS provides is helping you decide
if an attorney is needed. If our counselors determine your situation does
not require a referral to a lawyer, you will be referred to an appropriate
consumer, government, or public service agency.

Will I get an experienced
attorney?
When LRIS makes a referral you can be assured that the attorney has been
carefully screened. All of our lawyer panel members have been reviewed to make
sure they are licensed, carry malpractice insurance and are in good standing
with the State Bar of California.
We make referrals from a roster of lawyers skilled in over 35 areas of
law, including family law, estate planning, landlord-tenant rights, real
property, personal injury, and corporate and business law.

How much will it cost?
The
referral is free of charge as well as your first 30 minute consultation with
the lawyer. However, you should discuss future fees
with the lawyer during the initial consultation. It is important to understand
how the fees are determined and when they will need to be paid. The lawyer
will provide a written agreement that states what the services will cost.
In situations when it is impossible to determine the exact fee, an estimate
can be provided. Remember...you are under no obligation to engage
the services of the lawyer after your initial consultation.

What if the first lawyer you
refer me to doesnt work out?
LRIS will give you up to three lawyers names, one at a time. If
the first referral doesnt work out, simply call us back and we will
give you another name and number.

What if I've had an accident?
If you have been injured at work, at home, or in an accident, attorney's
fees are often dependent on your receiving a settlement. Usually the attorney's
fee will be limited to a percentage of your settlement.
Cases of legal and medical malpractice are often handled in the same
way.

What will I need for the initial
consultation?
In order to save time, bring all relevant documents and information to
your first appointment.
Be prepared to explain your case completely and clearly--sometimes writing
down the important points in advance will help.

What if I cannot afford an attorney?
Some LRIS panel lawyers will accept cases at a reduced fee.
Each situation is evaluated individually.
However, if your situation is in the family law area, LRIS does provide
lawyers who participate in our Modest Means program. These lawyers have
agreed to charge a reduced fee for clients who meet specific financial
guidelines. Ask our counselors at the time of your request about the guideline
requirements.
