Fellows Program In order to recognize San Diego lawyers who with professional, public and private careers which have demonstrated outstanding legal ability and devotion to the welfare of the community, the Bar Foundation is in the process of establishing a Fellows Program. Alec Cory Named Inaugural Fellow by the SD County Bar Foundation SAN DIEGO - March 10, 2005 - In recognition of his superior legal skills, high ethical standards and outstanding dedication to the community, the San Diego County Bar Foundation has installed Alec L. Cory as its Inaugural Fellow. In honor of Cory's installation, Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP the firm which Cory founded in 1946, has donated $20,000 to the Foundation's Fellows Fund. The installation was celebrated at Cory's 90th birthday party on Thursday, March 10, 2005, in the restored San Diego Trust & Savings building, where he found the law firm 59 years ago. Bar Foundation President Cindy Davis presented Cory with an engraved clock to commemorate the event. "We are honored to install Alec Cory as our inaugural fellow", says Davis. "Mr. Cory epitomizes what the Foundation envisions as a fellow - an attorney who is genuinely committed to clients, the practice of law, the local bar association, and the community in which we work and live." "I am proud to be celebrating my birthday with the men and women of Procopio who have not only helped the firm grow in size and recognition while at the same time adhering to our culture of caring about others - a culture of which we have always been proud," says Cory. "Alec has many times over earned his role as an icon at Procopio, Cory, Hargreaves & Savitch LLP and in the legal community. It's impossible not to respect him, and even harder not to like him," said Procopio managing partner, Tom Turner, Jr. Alec was born in Gallup, New Mexico, in 1915. He received his undergraduate degree in finance from the University of California at Berkeley in 1936, and his law degree from Boalt Hall, UC Berkeley, in 1939. After serving in the Navy in World War II, Alec returned to San Diego where he opened his law practice in 1946 with an emphasis in the areas of business, real estate and banking. He actively practiced law for over 47 before retiring in 1993. Alec served as a member of the Senior Advisory Board for the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, and on the Board of Trustees for the California State Colleges. The Foundation's Fellows program was established to recognize San Diego lawyers whose professional, public and private careers which have demonstrated outstanding legal ability and devotion to the welfare of the community.
