SUBJECT: ANNOUNCEMENT OF ESTABLISHMENT OF OFFICE
To whom may announcements of the establishment of an office be sent?
May the title of "professor" be indicated?
May the announcement be sent by the school where the attorney teaches?
If the attorney is going to announce the establishment of an office for the practice of law, the attorney should so indicate on a regular opening announcement. This announcement may be sent to other lawyers and judges and to personal friends. Sending an announcement to an organization such as the Rotary Club, however, is a blanketing type of announcement which is ethically improper.
The word "professor" should not appear on such announcement; however, the attorney may indicate legal degrees earned, such as "J.D.", after his or her name.
In addition, the announcement should be sent by the attorney and not the law school.
