Ethics Opinon 1973-10
SUBJECT: ADVERTISING. LISTING IN NAVAL AIR STATION DIRECTORY
May an attorney ethically list his or her name under the heading "attorneys" in the yellow pages of a Naval Air Station directory?
Such a listing would be improper because the directory is aimed at the general public, i.e., service personnel.
STATUTES AND CANONS
Canon 27 of the American Bar Association and Rule 2, Section B of the Rules of Professional Conduct provide that listings in directories may be proper depending on the purpose for the listing, its content, the form of the publication and the circulation of the directory.
An individual listing in this directory which is aimed at the general public and not professional people, is improper. One practical solution might be to have a listing for Lawyer's Referral Service and/or Legal Aid.
