Like many attorneys, you probably went to law school because you did not consider yourself to be a “numbers” person. If you have taken the plunge and have gone solo, you may think ignoring the numbers and key performance indicators of a small business may not hurt you and you are probably right. On the other hand, understanding and measuring your performance can help you make decisions, track your success, and identify your business cycles – all of which are necessary to actively manage and grow your business. Taking financial snapshots of your business can also offer early warning signs if a problem is on the horizon.

A few weeks ago I had an important telephonic meet and confer with opposing counsel from the East Coast scheduled ever-so-conveniently for 7:00 a.m. After waking at o’ dark hundred to prepare, I began a frantic, hour-long, and ultimately fruitless search for my cell phone. I missed the call. Fortunately, my boss called me not long after to alert me to this fact, which led me straight to my cell phone, tucked carefully behind my one-year-old’s crib.
