President's Message

2008 is the year of the Civility, Integrity, and Professionalism Campaign at the SDCBA! Please join us this Thursday, November 20, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Bar Center, for our final Campaign event of the year. It is an our inaugural Jay Wheeler Civility Seminar, entitled "Be Civil, Grow Rich: The Benefits of Civility, Integrity, and Professionalism in the Practice of Law." Three distinguished panelists- Judge Cormac Carney, Professor Erwin Chemerinsky, and Trial Attorney Thomas Girardi- will discuss the role of attorneys as officers of court; the effect of civility on advocacy; the benefits of professionalism to trial lawyers; the reputational impact within the court of poor behavior; and more. Volunteer Opportunities

Affordable Housing Advocates (AHA) is seeking applications from attorneys who are interested in serving on the board of directors, on a board committee or as an advisor, for three year terms. Applicants must practice or reside in San Diego County or the region.

AHA provides free legal assistance to low income residents of San Diego County. For more information about AHA please visit our website at www.affordablehousingadvocates.org.

  • The SDCBA Conference of Delegates Legislative Committee would like to solicit your input for proposed new or revised legislation. This is a forum in which members may propose changes to the statutory law of California, the Rules of Court, and other rules and procedures governing lawyers and the practice of law in California. If you would like to improve the law to serve the changing needs of society, please submit your ideas for proposed resolutions to the SDCBA Conference of Delegates Legislative Committee to Janet Grant at jgrant@sdcba.org by December 5, 2008.

  • Risky Business: Navigating the Latest Ethical Rules is now available as an Online Seminar -The SDCBA, working with Ahern Insurance Brokerage and XL Capital, the SDCBA’s exclusive insurance brokerage providers, designed this seminar to help legal professionals avoid situations that could lead to malpractice lawsuits. Credit has been approved with the State Bar of California for the following participatory credits: 0.5 General and 2.5 Legal Ethics credits.

  • The White House Fellows Association will host an information session for the White Fellows Program beginning at noon on December 1 at the SDCBA Bar Center. For more information about the information session, click here.

  • VIP Mentors, a unique mentoring program that pairs attorneys with parolees, is in jeopardy of having to discontinue their services, as the program will no longer be funded by the California Department of Corrections and rehabilitation. VIP mentors is looking to the public to for financial support until more permanent funding can be secured. Those who generally donate to VIP Mentors at the end of the calendar year or in conjunction with the organization's annual awards luncheon each January are urged to donate what is possible at this time.
