Knowing that team sports are a great way to relieve stress, have fun and network, the Young and New Lawyers Division recently created a sports committee to enter teams in the San Diego County Bar Association sports leagues.
The softball team was the YNLD’s first foray into the world of sports. Anyone was welcome to play, from the college stars to the Little League dropouts. The team’s support exceeded expectations, and over 30 YNLD members answered the call to join. The team’s roster was capped at 20 to make sure everyone got a chance to play, but the large response will ensure that two teams will be created for next year’s season. The team currently plays every Saturday, excluding holidays, and the season ends in October.
While the YNLD talent wouldn’t make SportsCenter’s Ultimate Highlight reel, the camaraderie of the team is obvious on the field and off. A home run or good play always clears the dugout, and on Thursday nights, many of the players hit the batting cages to practice their swings and talk shop. The team also got together for a barbecue and Padres game.
The YNLD sports committee is chaired by Mark Velasquez, and the teams are made up of the YNLD membership at large. The next teams the committee will put together will be for flag football in the fall and basketball in the winter. Keep an eye out for announcements for roster sign-ups. Questions?
