Description of what inspires you
I am inspired by sacrifice. It takes significant sacrifice just to make life work: we must balance work with family, balance support with self-care, and balance enjoying today with preparing for tomorrow.
Yet, some do more. On top of all that, some find room for charity and community. Some recognize that – despite pandemics, virtual schooling, and billable hours – all of us in this Bar Association have tremendous fortune. Those selfless acts inspire me to do more and make myself better.
Description of what you would bring to the SDCBA Board
As Past President of the San Diego County Bar Foundation – the charitable arm of the SDCBA – I would bring an increased focus on expanding access to our courts. At the SDCBF, we partnered with the judiciary to identify the critically underserved populations in San Diego County: veterans, immigrants, low-income children, and victims of sexual assault and sex trafficking. I know that I personally take for granted that, if aggrieved, my clients and I can rely upon San Diego’s criminal and civil courts to right a wrong. For thousands of our neighbors, the court system is confusing, too expensive, and wholly inaccessible.
With your vote, I will make sure our Board is reminded that we also serve those in our community who need us the most.
Other information you would like to share with the SDCBA membership
I am particularly driven to improve the lives of San Diego’s children. My wife and I are a foster family for children removed from their homes by the County, and we adopted our son Grey after he was born severely addicted to heroin and methamphetamines. In addition to my work for the SDCBF, I am on the Board of Directors at The New Children’s Museum and the San Diego Century Club – the organization that operates the Farmer’s Insurance Open and has raised more than $3 million for local youth. Although technically my own children are local youth, they drive me crazy and deserve nothing.
