Hello New Lawyer Division:
Are you interested in running for a position on the New Lawyer Division’s (“NLD”) Executive Committee?
The chance to serve on the NLD’s Executive Committee is one of the many leadership opportunities the SDCBA offers its members. This is an incredible time for New Lawyers like you to become involved with the SDCBA and gain the leadership skills necessary for future endeavors.  I encourage interested candidates to communicate with myself and other Executive Committee members about the NLD’s projects and experience in leadership.
As a member of the Executive Committee, you will play an integral role in shaping the programs and activities the NLD provides to our members. The vibrancy and success of the NLD is due to the efforts of New Lawyers serving in this capacity. To be eligible for a position, you must be within your first five years of practice. The nomination period opens on September 5, 2019 and closes on September 19, 2019. Any eligible member may nominate themselves for a position on the NLD’s Executive Committee. The election period opens on October 3, 2019 and closes on October 24, 2019. Candidates will be notified of election results on October 29, 2019. The winners will be announced on November 18, 2019. In order to allow for new leadership, a member may only serve for two consecutive years or for a maximum of two terms.

New Lawyers with diverse backgrounds and experiences are encouraged to submit a nomination. Providing leadership opportunities for minorities and underrepresented lawyers is a core value of the SDCBA and the NLD. Diversity isn’t just a “buzz” word we use – it’s a part of the very fabric of our association. We are committed to promoting inclusion in every aspect of our association and creating a more inclusive legal community.

I cannot emphasize how important it is to get involved and seek out leadership opportunities early in your career. Don’t wait to position yourself as a leader and develop your leadership skills. Taking on leadership roles is a great way to distinguish yourself from other New Lawyers and attorneys in the San Diego legal community. Think of it as an investment in your self-development and as a stepping-stone for your future goals.
If you have any questions or would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact me or Heather Breen, the Director of Governance and Member Engagement at
As always, I hope that you will continue to join us, and be sure to look out for future emails with events, programming and our monthly publication, For the Record.
