Hello New Lawyers and Law Students! Welcome to the San Diego County Bar Association (“SDCBA”) and the New Lawyer Forum (“NLF”). My name is Mellania Safarian and I am the Chair of NLF. In 2015, the SDCBA introduced NLF which was designed to be a “soft landing spot” or community for new lawyers and law students that would like to connect with other members in their first four years of practice. NLF provides opportunities for new lawyers and law students to engage by enjoying special networking, community service, programming, and social events specifically designed for you. And the best part is that membership is completely free!
We have our very first event, Game Night, coming up on Thursday, February 21st from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Bar Center which is located at the SDCBA’s headquarters on the 11th Floor of 401 West A Street, San Diego, California 92101. Grab your favorite board or card game and bring your friends, co-workers, significant other, etc. and join us for a fun night! No RSVP is needed and there is no charge for the event. If you can’t make it, don’t worry, we have an event coming up every third Thursday of every month for the rest of the year. I look forward to meeting all of you at all of our upcoming events.
We chose to have our first monthly meet-up at the Bar Center because it is an amazing space that not enough new lawyers utilize. Located in the heart of downtown, the Bar Center is comprised of a large Conference Center, an exclusive member lounge, and a shared member workspace. New lawyers can visit the Bar Center to take a break from the workday, check emails between court appearances, meet up with colleagues, read the newspaper, or enjoy an assortment of complimentary drinks and healthy snacks. The Bar Center also offers small, private conference rooms to meet with clients, witnesses, opposing counsel, friends, or mentors. With free Wi-Fi access and free use of copiers and office supplies, the Bar Center is a great place to get some work done outside of the office – a place where you can work independently or collaboratively, right in the heart of downtown. Think of it as your “office away from your office.” Did I mention the free mail delivery service? You have to check it out!
The NLF also provides opportunities for new lawyers to get involved with the SDCBA and develop their leadership skills. We are currently looking to recruit members for the following subcommittees: (1) Events; (2) Programming; (3) For the Record; (4) Community Service; and (5) Marketing. Each subcommittee is headed by one of NLF’s Executive Committee Members-At-Large: (1) Stephanie Sandler; (2) Brianna Berg; (3) Kevin Hambly; (4) Keith Van Wagner; and (5) Mary Allain. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org. Even if you are not interested in serving on a subcommittee, we welcome you to attend our monthly meetings which take place on the last Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the Bar Center. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 26th. We hope you can join us and always love to hear from our members!
We hope that you will continue to join us and be sure to look out for future emails with events, programming, and our monthly publication, For the Record. Also, make sure to check out our website at https://www.sdcba.org/?pg=NewLawyerForum and like us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/SDCBAForum/ to stay connected. We are very excited for the year ahead and look forward to meeting all of you very soon!
