Hello New Lawyers and Law Students! Welcome to the San Diego County Bar Association (“SDCBA”) and the New Lawyer Division (“NLD”). My name is Stephanie Sandler and I am honored to be the Chair of NLD for 2020. In case you’re not sure what NLD is, in 2015 the SDCBA introduced NLD to be a “soft landing spot” or community for new lawyers and law students that would like to connect with other members in their initial stage of practice. NLD provides opportunities for new lawyers and law students to engage by enjoying special networking, community service, programming, and social events specifically designed for you. And the best part is that membership is completely free!

The NLD also provides opportunities for new lawyers to get involved with the SDCBA and develop their leadership skills. We are currently looking to recruit volunteers for all of our subcommittees: (1) Events; (2) Programming; (3) For the Record; (4) Community Service; and (5) Marketing. Each subcommittee is headed by one of NLD’s Executive Committee Members-At-Large: (1) Stephanie Atkinson; (2) Michaela Jester; (3) Kevin Hambly; (4) Mary Allain; and (5) Christopher Champine. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact me directly at ssandler@hoguebelonglaw.com. Even if you are not interested in serving on a subcommittee, we welcome you to attend our monthly meetings at the Bar Center. Our next meeting is tentatively scheduled for Monday, February 17, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. We hope you can join us and always love to hear from our members!

You may be thinking, “But Stephanie, wasn’t NLD called something else last year?”  You’re right.  For the last few years, up until about halfway through last year, we were known as the New Lawyer Forum (“NLF”).  That’s why, if you still see a few links with that name, don’t worry.  You’ve still found the right place.

We have our first meetup of the year TODAY, January 16, 2020 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the The Office Bar in North Park located at 3936 30th Street, San Diego, CA 92104.  Grab an old fashioned (or other beverage of choice) and meet fellow new lawyers at the swankiest 60s inspired bar in town.  Friends, co-workers, and significant others are all welcome.  This is a no-host bar, FREE event. If you can’t make it, don’t worry, all of our upcoming events will be posted on our website (https://www.sdcba.org/?pg=NewLawyerForum) and right here in For the Record

Another great way to stay connected to NLD is through our various digital outlets.  Got a question about your legal practice that a brain trust could help solve?  Post it to our NLD Listserv at: sdcbanld@lists.membercentral.com.  Is social media more your jam?  Like our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/SDCBAForum/.  We post pictures from NLD events and keep our members up-to-date on other awesome upcoming SDCBA events.  In fact, on January 29, 2020 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. SDCBA is hosting a Legal Community Open House and Law Student Reception at Bar Center located at 401 W. A Street, San Diego, CA 92101.  NLD Executive Committee Members-At-Large will be in attendance to offer a guide to SDCBA or just chat about life.  Also, feel free to challenge us to a game of tabletop corn hole.  You may even win a prize!

We hope that you will continue to join us and be sure to look out for future emails with events, programming, and our monthly publication, For the Record. We are very excited for the year ahead and look forward to meeting all of you very soon!

Best,

Stephanie Sandler
