New Lawyers:

It was an absolute pleasure meeting all of you at our February Meet-Up, Game Night. It was a great way to unwind and get to know some of our new members. We hope you will continue to join us at future events. But for those of you who couldn’t join us, the NLF will be hosting a meet-up every third Thursday of the month, a CLE once per quarter, in addition to several community service based activities. The goal of these events is to engage members, facilitate relationships, and establish support systems by offering a wide range of networking opportunities specifically designed for new lawyers.

The New Lawyer Forum also provides its membership with opportunities to get published through the SDCBA’s award winning e-publication, For The Record. Each month, new lawyers are encouraged to submit proposed publications to the Editor in Chief, Kevin Hambly, on a wide variety of themes and topics relevant to the practice of law. The publication is distributed on the third Thursday of each month. If you are interested in becoming a published author, please submit your proposed article to Kevin Hambly at Articles must be 800 to 1,000 words in length. Next month’s topic will be Tax Law and proposed articles must be submitted by April 2nd.

I’m also excited to announce that the New Lawyer Forum Executive Committee has set a date and selected a theme for the annual Signature Event - Friday, August 16th! The theme this year will be an all white party which is perfect for those who strictly adhere to the sacred fashion rule of “no white after Labor Day.” But for those who are unfamiliar with this age-old adage, we decided to do a little digging into the history of this clothing commandment for you. According to a 2009 Time article, it’s possible the directive may very well have been born out of function. Back in the days before air conditioning, white attire was simply “cooler” to wear in the warmer, summer months. So bust out your “coolest” outfit and join us for our biggest event of the year!

The New Lawyer Forum has had a successful start to the year and we are excited to continue to build this momentum. If you are interested in getting involved with the New Lawyer Forum or have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at And don’t forget to like us on Facebook to get all the latest updates: We look forward to seeing you at our next event!
