2020 Certificates of Recognition

CERTIFICATE FOR COLLABORATION

Criteria for This Recognition:

Programming that embraces the Association’s “co-production” model by collaborating with other Sections, Committees, Divisions, or Law-Related Organizations to facilitate learning across more than one practice area, and to provide opportunities for building connections in the legal community.

Taxation Law Section

The Taxation Law Section is great success story! After successfully filling five seats on the Section’s Executive Committee halfway through the year, including the New Lawyer Member-At-Large, the new Section Executive Committee revamped its plan and started producing an incredible line-up of informative programs and fun events to connect and engage Section members. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, and having a vacant Executive Committee for the first six months of the year, the revitalized Section proactively reached out to co-produce three CLE programs with the Real Property Section, Business & Corporate Section, and Bankruptcy Section. These cross-over programs touched on a variety of issues where tax law intersects with another area of practice, which broadened the scope of the content and drew in a larger audience.

2020 Programs:

  • CLE: Allocation of the Million Dollar Exclusion & How to Lose at the Assessor’s Office (Collaborated with the Real Property Section)
  • CLE: Choice of Entity: The Difference Between LLC’s and S Corporations (Collaborated with Business & Corp Section)
  • CLE: Tax and Bankruptcy (Collaborated with the Bankruptcy Section)
CERTIFICATE FOR VARIETY OF ACTIVITY

Criteria for This Recognition:

Engaging members through a variety of events and activities, outreach efforts, and program formats and mediums—e.g., virtually through a listserv, educational programming, social and networking events, leadership opportunities, and community service—which provides members with different opportunities to connect with each other in ways that are meaningful to them.

Alternative Dispute Resolution Section

The ADR Section produced 9 programs and events (the most of any Section), including their bi-monthly “Coffee & Conversation Roundtable,” three CLE programs, a program targeted at mediators on conducting virtual mediations, and an informal “Court Room Brown Bag” session with Hon. Randa Trapp. This was accomplished while quickly adapting to changing circumstances as a result of the pandemic—underscoring the Section's agility and the value delivered to the Section’s members.

2020 Programs:

  • Courtroom Brown Bag with Hon. Randa Trapp
  • Coffee & Conversation Roundtable: The Singapore Convention
  • Tutorial for Mediators: How to Conduct Virtual Mediation
  • ADR Coffee & Conversation Roundtable: Zoom Basics for Mediators
  • ADR: Catastrophic Injury Mediation
  • Resolving Conflict Among Business Owners
  • Coffee & Conversation Roundtable: Q&A with Mike Roddy
  • Mediation in Today’s Market: What to Do to Be Successful
  • Coffee & Conversation: Real Estate Mediation and Arbitration Disputes

CERTIFICATE FOR VARIETY OF ACTIVITY

Criteria for This Recognition:

Engaging members through a variety of events and activities, outreach efforts, and program formats and mediums—e.g., virtually through a listserv, educational programming, social and networking events, leadership opportunities, and community service—which provides members with different opportunities to connect with each other in ways that are meaningful to them.

Estate Planning, Trust & Probate Law Section

The Estate Section produced 6 programs and events, all while adapting to changing circumstances as a result of the pandemic, including a networking mixer with the New Lawyer Division and four CLE programs (which included an impressive “Annual Year In Review” program and a COVID-19 Update from the Probate Court).

2020 Programs:

  • Probate Court Update: COVID-19 Operations
  • Estate Planning, Trust & Probate Law 2019 Year in Review
  • Issues and Tactical Considerations in Elder Abuse Litigation
  • Now What? Enforcement and Collection of a Surcharge Order
  • Asset Protection
  • Fall Networking Mixer: Estate Section & NLD
CERTIFICATE FOR NEW LAWYER ENGAGEMENT

Criteria for This Recognition:

This recognition is based on programming that focuses on new lawyers to engage and educate them on a variety of topics related to the practice of law or a substantive area of law, and provides them with opportunities to learn, interact with each other, and develop relationships within all segments of the SDCBA and legal profession.

Business & Corporate Law Section

The Business & Corporate Law Section produced two programs geared towards New Lawyers:

2020 Programs:

  • The Art of Billing Roundtable
  • To Be or Not To Be Overwhelmed: Contract Management Systems 101

These programs underscored this Section's outreach to new lawyers and the commitment to ensuring these lawyers are equipped with the knowledge and insight they need as they begin the practice of law and integrate into the legal profession and the SDCBA.

CERTIFICATE FOR INNOVATION

Criteria for This Recognition:

Creating new and interesting ways to connect and engage members by thinking “outside the box” of traditional learning, connection, and engagement methods.

Environmental / Land Use Law Section

The Environmental / Land Use Law Section started utilizing a “Monthly Member Spotlight,” which highlights a Section member and practice area through the listserv. This innovative approach not only allows various Section members to shine, but it also builds community and connection among Section members, and illustrates that the Section is engaged beyond CLE programming—it also promotes its members and encourages engagement with each other.

1. The Sections did not have much activity this year in terms of programming for New Lawyers or “Basics 101” content. The Labor & Employment Law Section won the New Lawyer Engagement Certificate of Recognition last year for the Section’s annual “When Mentee Met Mentor: Labor & Employment Speed Networking Mixer.” Because it received the recognition last year, the list of proposed recipients for 2020 excludes the Labor & Employment Law Section.
