Removing the Stigma: Suicide Detection and Prevention in the Legal Profession (1.0 Competency Issues Participatory Credit)

Published by San Diego County Bar Association

Understanding suicidal thinking can be difficult and sometimes seemingly impossible for many people to understand. It can be perplexing how a person can be blind to his or her successes, to seemingly disregard the love and support from others, or appear unwilling or unmotivated to “get better.” Dr. Conway and Dr. Wahler will discuss the prevalence of suicide in the legal profession, the impact stigma can have on seeking treatment, how to identify warning signs, and what to do if you have serious concerns about another person’s well-being and safety.

Specific points to be covered include:

- Occupations vulnerable to depression and suicide
- Attitudes and approach towards coworkers or clients in need of mental health treatment
- How to identify risk factors and warning signs that lead to suicidal behaviors
- Interventions and how you can help
- Mental health treatment overview: removing the mystery
