How to Join LRIS FAQ
How long does it take for my LRIS membership application to be processed?
It takes about one month for applications to be processed. The LRIS Committee reviews all completed membership applications on the 4th Monday of each month. All applications must be received by the second week of each month. Learn how to join the LRIS and download the application.
How many referrals will I receive each month?
The number of referrals varies by each area of law. Some areas of law are busier than others and will receive more referrals. To get an idea of how many calls each area of law receives each month, it is best to contact the LRIS Director for specific information.
What are the insurance requirements?
The State Bar Minimum Standards indicates that each Lawyer Referral Service must require each panel member to possess a policy of errors and omissions insurance in an amount not less than $100,000 for each occurrence and $300,000 aggregate per year. Along with the completed LRIS membership application, you can submit a Certificate of Insurance or a cover sheet of your policy indicating the dates of coverage, the person insured, and the amounts of coverage. You are required to make the Lawyer Referral and Information Service of the San Diego County Bar Association a certificate holder on your policy. The coverage must be in existence during your participation on the panel and should it lapse, you are obligated to immediately notify the Service.
What if I do not have an insurance carrier?
Do you have any suggestions? If you do not have an errors and omissions policy, the San Diego County Bar Association does offer liability insurance through Ahern Insurance Brokerage. For more information on AIB professional liability insurance, please contact Sheila Denessen, CISR at (858) 514-7131 or via e-mail at sdenessen@
Can I submit an attorney recommendation from an attorney that is a business partner?
No, we require that the attorney recommendation be from a colleague with whom you do not have a business relationship. We want to verify that attorneys have witnessed your work and professionalism. We want to ensure that all attorneys on the service are qualified and professional at all times.
Does the recommendation have to be from an attorney in the same area of practice that I am applying for?
Yes, we require that the attorney recommendation be from an attorney who has witnessed your work.
Do I have to be a member of the San Diego County Bar Association (SDCBA) to join LRIS?
No, you do not have to be a member of SDCBA to join LRIS. However, the registration fee is slightly higher to join at $350 annually for Non-SDCBA members. If you are a member of SDCBA, then the fee to join LRIS is $125 annually.
What happens if I go through the process and my LRIS membership application is rejected?
Do I get my money back? If your panel application is rejected, then the LRIS Committee will send you a letter indicating further clarification on your application and ask for you to re-submit your application with more details. However, your registration and application fee is non-returnable.
If you have any additional questions about how to join LRIS, please feel free to contact LRIS directly at (619) 321-4150 or via e-mail at email@example.com.
