Make the Most of Your Membership

SDCBA’s Section and Committees
Membership in the SDCBA’s Section and Committees can enhance your member experience. The SDCBA is comprised of over 50 unique sections, committees, and divisions, and member groups, which each serve as member communities. Each member community provides the opportunity for SDCBA members to work together to educate one another and others in the community on substantive areas of law, and also serves as a forum for legal professionals to discuss common problems and issues that affect a particular area of law. The SDCBA’s member communities are the backbone of all SDCBA services, providing community service and leadership opportunities for SDCBA members, and guiding and supporting larger association-wide initiatives. Sustaining Members
Members who wish to support the many activities of the SDCBA are invited
to become a Sustaining Member as a Patron, Benefactor or Friend. All Sustaining Members are recognized in each issue of Bar publications, on the SDCBA website and in the SDCBA’s Bar Center. To view a list of the current Sustaining Members, click here.

Join in our Community Service—Lawyers Giving Back Initiative
In 2009, the SDCBA launched the community service campaign, Lawyers Giving Back. Through this campaign, 2009 SDCBA President Jerrilyn Malana challenged every SDCBA member to dedicate 50 hours a year to either pro bono work or community service projects, in accordance with the American Bar Association’s recommended guidelines. For more information about the campaign and to find a volunteer opportunity, click here.

Become a Bar Leader
Your SDCBA membership offers a variety of leadership opportunities for its members. Opportunities range from chairing or co-chairing sections, committees, and sub-committees to helping your section produce a CLE, to leading one of the organization’s volunteer efforts, such as Habitat for Humanity. The best place to look for leadership opportunities within the SDCBA is to contact the chairs of the sections or committees you are already involved in. You can also frequently check the volunteer opportunities section of the SDCBA website here.

If you have ever thought about getting involved in the oversight and governance of the SDCBA, please consider running for the SDCBA Board of Directors. SDCBA Board nominations take place in the fall with elections taking place in November. Look for information about the nomination process in upcoming issues of This Week at the Bar.
