7 Programs with Hon. Katherine A. Bacal

Judge Bacal has an independent calendar civil assignment, hearing cases in the downtown Hall of Justice. She previously presided over departments in the Chula Vista, El Cajon and Downtown courthouses, hearing cases involving family law and criminal matters (including felony arraignment in Chula Vista for two years).

Before being appointed to the bench by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in January 2008, Judge Bacal was a partner in the San Diego office of Baker & McKenzie LLP. She started her legal career at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLC. Judge Bacal received her law degree from the University of Texas at Austin and her undergraduate degree from the University of Redlands, Johnston Center, where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa.

Judge Bacal is a current member of ABTL, San Diego’s Judicial Advisory Board, and is a past member of ABTL’s board. She is also a member of the Advisory Board of Lawyers Club of San Diego. Before being appointed to the bench, Judge Bacal was Lawyers Club’s president and is a past board member. She is also a member of the Louis M. Welsh Chapter of the American Inns of Court. Judge Bacal received Lawyers Club’s Belva Lockwood Award in 2015.
