1 Program with Hon. Joan Lewis

Judge Joan M. Lewis was appointed to the Superior Court of California for San Diego County in 1998 by former Governor Pete Wilson. She is presently assigned to a Civil Independent Calendar department and has been there for fourteen years. Prior to this assignment she spent five years assigned to Family Court. She currently serves as a member of the San Diego Superior Court Executive Committee and is a member of the Judicial Advisory Board for the Association of Business Trial Lawyers (ABTL). Judge Lewis is an Executive Committee Member & Vice President of the California Judges Foundation as well as a Master in the Wallace Inn of Court.

Prior to Judge Lewis’s appointment to the bench, Judge Lewis was in private practice. Judge Lewis was a partner at Lewis, D’Amato, Brisbois & Bisgaard where she specialized in civil litigation, including representing health care professionals in medical malpractice lawsuits.

Judge Lewis previously served on the Board of Directors and Faculty of the San Diego Inn of Court. Judge Lewis was a Master in the Enright and Welsh Inns of Court. Judge Lewis also served as Co-Chair of the San Diego Superior Court ADR Committee and served two terms as Vice President of the California Judges Association.

Judge Lewis is the 2017 judicial recipient of the Bernard E. Witkin, Esq. Award for Excellence in the Adjudication of the Law presented by the San Diego Law Library Justice Foundation of San Diego County. In 2014 Judge Lewis was awarded Friend of the Community Award by the Tom Homann LGBT Law Association for her commitment to LGBTQ rights.

Judge Lewis received her J.D. at California Western School of Law in 1987 and her B.S. in Microbiology from Arizona State University in 1980.
