Protecting the Rule of Law on Law Day
The principles of judicial independence, a fearless and independent legal profession, and the rule of law are cornerstones of a just and democratic society.
To celebrate Law Day and its long standing principles, the San Diego County Bar Association and Federal Bar Association have teamed up to invite legal professionals including attorneys, judges, and legal support to attend a special Renewing Oath Ceremony. This National Law Day of Action special event will take place at the Carter Keep U.S. Courthouse on 333 W Broadway on May 1 from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
This event offers San Diego legal professionals the opportunity to reaffirm their dedication to justice, integrity, and the highest ethical standards in the practice of law. The focus is not on politics, but on upholding the rule of law and defending judicial independence, as well as the independence of the legal profession as a whole. This event is open to all local members of the bench and bar. Our aim is to help promote public understanding about the importance of the rule of law, culminating in the symbolic retaking of the attorney's oath by Chief Judge Cynthia Bashant of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.
This special ceremony will take place inside the Carter Keep Courthouse. Space is limited. As our federal courts are hosting this event, with state and federal judicial officers in attendance, we ask that all participants adhere to the highest levels of civility, integrity, and professionalism in their support of the Constitution and all it stands for. No posters or signs, and please allow additional time to go through court security.
San Diego joins other cities participating in the National Law Day of Action, including Los Angeles, Dallas, Washington, D.C., Tampa Bay, Phoenix, San Francisco, Chicago, and 40+ other major metropolitan areas.
As U.S. District Judge Anthony J. Battaglia (SDCBA Past President) wrote in 1992, "Our law, our rights and our courts are something worthy of celebration. We have the finest system among the world's nations for the protection of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is a system that needs our continuous support, protection and involvement."
