San Diego County Bar Association Condemns Shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA (May 21, 2026) - The San Diego County Bar Association strongly condemns the horrific mass shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego on May 18, 2026, which claimed the lives of three community members: Nader Awad, Mansour Kaziha, and Amin Abdullah.
This senseless act of violence targeted a place of worship and learning, and it occurred while small children and their families were present on campus. We commend the courage of the security personnel, first responders, law enforcement officers, and community members who acted swiftly to protect lives and secure the area. Their heroic actions saved lives.
Our resolve against hate is unequivocal. There is no room for hate-driven rhetoric or senseless attacks on marginalized communities. Freedom of religion is a core tenet of our society, guaranteed by the First Amendment. As an organization rooted in access to justice and the rule of law, we stand in solidarity with our Muslim neighbors and the entire San Diego community.
The SDCBA embraces statements of support issued by other bar associations, including the Arab American Bar Association of San Diego, the South Asian Bar Association of San Diego, San Diego Jewish Bar Association, Iranian American Bar Association of San Diego, and others who have expressed solidarity with the Muslim community. We also encourage individuals to share their support with those who are impacted by this tragedy. Visit the Islamic Center of San Diego website for additional ways to provide tangible, meaningful assistance to our neighbors who need us.
Our own acceptance of each other is the most powerful form of opposition to hatred. Our hearts are with the families and loved ones of the victims, the San Diego Muslim community, and all those impacted by this tragedy.
We mourn together, and we stand together.
