Law Week 2020 — "Your Vote, Your Voice, Our Democracy: The 19th Amendment at 100."

In 1848, the movement for women’s rights launched on a national level with the Seneca Falls Convention organized by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott. Following the convention, the demand for the vote became a centerpiece of the women’s rights movement. Stanton and Mott, along with Susan B. Anthony and other activists, raised public awareness and lobbied the government to grant voting rights to women. After a lengthy battle, these groups finally emerged victorious with the passage of the 19th Amendment. Posters and videos should reflect the importance of the 19th amendment and its impact on the rights of United States citizens.

This year’s theme discusses the women’s suffrage movement and how it forever changed America, expanding representative democracy and inspiring other popular movements for constitutional change and reform. The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution granted American women the right to vote, a right known as women’s suffrage, and was ratified on August 18, 1920, ending a century of protest.

The History of Law Week.

Law Week is a series of celebratory events leading up to Law Day. Held annually on May 1, Law Day is a national day of observance set aside to celebrate the rule of law. The idea originally came from Eisenhower’s legal counsel, Hicks Epton, who also served as president of the American Bar Association. Eisenhower proclaimed Law Day, U.S.A. in 1958 and it was later codified by Public Law 87-20 in 1961. Since then, Law Day has celebrated how the legal process protects our liberty, strives to achieve justice and contributes to American freedoms. During Law Week, the San Diego County Bar Association celebrates with exciting events leading up to Law Day.
